READING, Pa. — The Freyberger Gallery will host a special exhibition of photography by Niko J. Kallianiotis titled "America in a Trance." The exhibit runs from Jan. 18 to Feb. 22, 2018, with an opening reception at 6 p.m. on Jan. 18. This event is free and open to the public.
Kallianiotis was born in Greece and has made northeastern Pennsylvania his home. He worked for years as a photographer for newspapers, honing his skills in observation of his environment and discovering chilling realizations about the so-called “American Dream.”
In 1931, when writer James Truslow Adams coined the term “American Dream,” it had more to do with idealism than material prosperity. From the perspective of an immigrant, Kallianiotis wrote, “Industrialism provided a place where immigrants from tattered European countries crossed the Atlantic for a better future ... this project is an ongoing observation of the fading American Dream so typified in the northeastern Pennsylvania landscape but widespread across the United States.”
Kallianiotis is a contributing photographer for the New York Times and works as a lecturer of photography at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and an instructor at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
