Penn State Berks will host its first Oxfam Hunger Banquet for students at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room.
READING, Pa. — Penn State Berks will join a national movement to raise awareness about issues related to hunger by hosting its first Oxfam Hunger Banquet for students at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, in the Perkins Student Center Multipurpose Room. This event is open to current Penn State Berks students.
When students arrive at an Oxfam Hunger Banquet event, they draw tickets at random that assign each to a high-, middle-, or low-income tier—based on the latest statistics about poverty around the world. Each income level has a different experience. The 20 percent in the high-income tier are served a sumptuous meal; the 30 percent in the middle-income group eat a simple meal, like rice and beans; and the 50 percent in the low-income tier help themselves to small portions of rice and water. During the banquet, a master of ceremonies guides participants through this interactive experience. Finally, the students come together to share their thoughts after the meal.
Every year, thousands of people attend Oxfam Hunger Banquet events around the country. This interactive event has been increasing awareness of hunger issues for more than 40 years.
