READING, Pa. — Sociologist Jennifer Murphy will discuss her new book, Illness or Deviance: Drug Courts, Drug Treatment, and the Ambiguity of Addiction, at 6 p.m., Dec. 6, at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia as part of the prison’s “Searchlight Series.”
This presentation is free and open to the public.
The title of Murphy’s talk is “The Enduring Stigma of Drug Addiction.” Murphy earned a doctorate in sociology from Temple University in 2008 and is currently associate professor of criminal justice at Penn State Berks.
Illness or Deviance?explores the overlap of drug treatment and the criminal justice system. The book has been well-reviewed; the American Journal of Sociology called the book “a fascinating case study [that]…raises critical questions about the medicalization of addiction,” while Choice said the book was an “…important and illuminating analysis of the paradoxes and inconsistencies riddling the drug treatment field today.”
Now in its fourth year, the Searchlight Series brings “nationally recognized penologists and educators to present an ongoing discussion series about crime, justice, and the American prison system.” Eastern State Penitentiary is located at 2027 Fairmount Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
