WYOMISSING, Pa. — Jill Felker, adjunct instructor and research technician for biology and biochemistry and molecular biology at Penn State Berks, has been selected to receive the Society of Women Environmental Professionals (SWEP) scholarship, a graduate student scholarship in the amount of $3,000, which will be presented at SWEP Greater Philadelphia’s Annual Touchstone Awards Reception in the fall.
As part of the application process, Felker submitted an essay about her dissertation research, which?assesses the antibiotic resistant microbial populations and the chemical characteristics of the Blue Marsh Watershed. She discussed why water quality upstream in Berks County is extremely important to the communities downstream that use the water for drinking water, such as the City of Philadelphia.
The application process also included completing an application and submitting undergraduate and graduate transcripts, a resume, and two letters of recommendation. For the second round of the application process, Felker had a Skype interview with the SWEP Scholarship Committee.
Felker states that she plans to use the SWEP scholarship for laboratory supplies that are necessary for her research. She is currently working toward a doctorate in environmental studies at Antioch University New England, in Keene, New Hampshire.
